That time we worked from a hotel for the day

A space to bring your ideas to light.
A space to inspire.
A space to dream big.
Those words are mantras around here—0n our website, our Twitter feed, our sales decks. We’re constantly touting the benefits of offsite gatherings. But caught up in the hectic day to day that is startup life, we’d yet to give it a try ourselves.
Over the past few months we’ve been hard at work curating a selection of unique meeting spaces at hotels around New York City (and a few other places) that are sure to be the perfect backdrop for a [ insert one: productive/inspiring/successful ] meeting. Oh, and building a beautiful new web and mobile app to make booking said meeting spaces super simple.
To give you a little background, our team has more than doubled in the months since our launch. Even with one of us working remotely, we’re starting to push the physical limits of our 6-person office. Despite the inspired “Do What You Love” mantra painted along the walls of our beautifully-designed WeWork building, there are brief moments in which our team’s space starts to feel like…a glass case of emotion.
So, last week we decided to give an offsite a go. And, suffice it to say, we were all super pleased (and a bit surprised) by the results. Turns out, simply changing up your environment for the day can really work some magic.
For our offsite we decided to ditch the conference room vibe and book a more versatile suite for the day at one of our partner hotel properties in the Lower East Side. Throughout our afternoon of bonding (and plotting world domination) we learned some pretty valuable things about offsite meetings:
1. Getting away from the everyday workspace can work wonders.
There’s a tendency to question that while you’re in the planning phase. Is it really worth it? Why not just meet in our conference room? But once you’re out, the value becomes quite obvious.
2. The space itself makes a huge difference.
While I initially thought it might be strange to be in a suite versus a more traditional meeting space, the setup lent a lovely, relaxed feel to the day. The large living room area was ideal for brainstorming, dreaming, and charting the near-term future. The natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows gave a sense of buoyancy to our conversations. Oh, and the giant terrace with views of downtown Manhattan didn’t hurt either.
3. Hotel amenities rock.
After a hearty lunch, we returned to the room and collective sleepiness set in. But the solution was just a phone call away. Ten minutes later, caffeine knocked on the door and a group nap was averted. Side note: with the Bizly app, you can select food and beverage options during the booking process.
4. Setting an agenda and goals ahead of time is key.
Prior to our meeting, each of us was asked to prepare some thoughts about our biggest priorities, our challenges and how we envision the company in both the immediate future and over the next couple of years. This was a great way to kick off the day and get the ideas flowing. Hearing perspectives from each team set the tone for a well-rounded plan of attack.
That said, there was a moment mid-afternoon where our working session devolved into each of us getting pulled into the work demands of the outside world. Maybe next time we’ll schedule a few quick email check-in breaks throughout the day rather than one longer session to ensure we stay united and focused. Or, perhaps we’ll just ditch the phones and computers all together.
All in all, we had a really productive day. In a space that inspired, we brought our ideas to light and dreamed big. We practiced what we’ve been preaching. I think I can speak for the whole team when I say we left feeling really excited about where we can steer Bizly in the coming months. We may have only been a few subway stops from our office, but it felt like we moved the business to a whole new place.

Why All Companies Without A Small Meetings Program Need To Consider “Simplified+”
